Graham Bonnet - Flying...Not Falling 1991-1999 (3 CD Box Set - Import)
This collection only covers a small part of the Graham Bonnet story, as few frontmen can claim to have had such a lengthy and far-reaching career, first finding fame as part of The Marbles duo, who enjoyed a hit with the Bee Geesâ âOnly One Womanâ in 1968, followed by a solo career across the 1970s, again enjoying further success with the Bee Gees on the disco flavoured âWarm Rideâ. Achieving what was possibly his greatest success in 1979 for âDown To Earthâ in Rainbow, Worldwide hits followed with the singles âAll Night Longâ and âSince You Been Goneâ. Further solo success beckoned with the song âNight Gamesâ from the âLine-Upâ album in 1981, before Graham briefly joined The Michael Schenker Group for 1982âs âAssault Attackâ. Graham then formed Alcatrazz with a then little known Swedish guitarist called Yngwie J. Malmsteen, who would be replaced by another legendary axe slinger, Steve Vai, before the singer hooked up with Chris Impellitteri and the band Impellitteri, Graham has subsequently recorded with Forcefield, Japanâs Anthem, the Taz Taylor Band and Blackthorne with Bob Kulick in 1993.
Kicking off with 1999âs âThe Day I Went Madâ, Grahamâs last solo album of the decade, and his sixth in total, has a whole host of special guests. Joining a band comprising Kevin Valentine on drums, Mario Parga on guitars and John Thomas on guitar and keyboards, are former Alcatrazz guitarist, Danny Johnson, Vivian Campbell of Dio, Whitesnake & Def Leppard, Bruce Kulick (KISS & Meat Loaf), plus Slash from Guns Nâ Roses and Tim Bogert from Vanilla Fudge. This album has been expanded with a number of live curios from his 2000 tour, including The Beatlesâ âIâm Down/Lucilleâ and Rainbowâs âSince You Been Goneâ, as well as âSpiked!â and âKillerâ from âThe Day I Went Madâ album.
1997âs âUndergroundâ was Grahamâs fifth solo record, and saw him reunited with guitarist Danny Johnson who had previously played together on Alcatrazzâs third and final LP, âDangerous Gamesâ. As well as a rocked-up cover of Jimi Hendrixâs âThe Wind Cries Maryâ, and âLost In Hollywoodâ, a song that Graham had originally sung on Rainbowâs 1979 hit, âDown To Earthâ, the album is now augmented by 7 songs recorded live at Culver City, 12th May 2000; Alcatrazzâs âIsland In The Sunâ, âGod Blessed Videoâ & âWill You Be Home Tonightâ, Rainbowâs âAll Night Longâ, MSGâs âDancerâ, plus âOnly One Womanâ and âS.O.S.â.
1991âs âHere Comes The Nightâ saw Graham move far away from his more rock orientated path to take a more pop flavoured approach, including covers of Ray Davies âI Go To Sleepâ, Denny Laineâs âEyes Of A Childâ, Leiber & Stollerâs âDonâtâ and James Brownâs âIâll Go Crazyâ. âHere Comes The Nightâ now includes four bonus instrumental demos; âGone In A Minuteâ, â A Hole In My Soulâ, âPlease Call Meâ and âGreenwich Meantimeâ.
